Traffic

December 17, 2007 —

Back in the day, we used to build sites for professional athletes. These were sites for top-of-their-game types (NBA being the typical game), and they all had egos. So each time we got ready to launch a new forum, the same question would come up: do we want moderation inside this thing?

The answer was “no” (”hell no”). As soon as you’d get a heckler inside the thing talking trash about the player’s mother or calling out a bad play / game, the forum would light up, and the site would turn into the most interesting place on the internet for all with an opinion on the topic.

The last thing you want to do is moderate that interest.

Blogs are the same way. They draw traffic and interest through controversy, even if the topic is purely trash-talk in nature.

Anyway, I missed out on the real topic, so the only thing I have left to add is “your mother’s a…”

I can’t do it. This is why I fail.

Content moderation is something that must be considered. I agree that some things are okay to say, but you must consider the context they are being said in. If a contraversial topic arises, it is okay to say disputing things about the topic but when it comes to an attack on the individual, I believe a line has been crossed.

For the sake of your site, sometimes moderation has to come into play.

Yep, there’s a line. I didn’t enjoy the Kathy Sierra story.
