Hiring anxiety 180

August 28, 2007 —

Over the last three months, we’ve turned away hundreds of project requests. It’s the type of situation that makes you second guess certain things. Like hiring.

The easiest thing we could do right now is hire. Add two or three producers and a project manager to the machine, and we’d have them at capacity by noon.

But subtract out the minimum amount of training and background initiation required to bring them up to speed as well as the additional attention demand of new / more clients, and it begins to feel like a wash. The side effect increases in reverse proportion to level of competence of each person that joins up.

I remember the days when hiring seemed uncomfortable as hell. Now it seems uncomfortable not to.

Update/clarification: contrary to the entire premise of this post, we actually are actively looking for 1 [php] hero, and you don’t have to live in the middle of the continent to fit in (telecommuting is an option).
